Mental Health Counselor Intern


Position Summary: 

Under supervision of the Clinical Director and Collaborative Supervisors, the Mental Health Intern is responsible for providing standardized counseling/talk therapy for clients with mild to moderate mental health conditions. The Intern will work to address clients' behavioral/social needs by evaluating conditions, developing comprehensive care plans and utilizing referral sources for specialty care, hospitalization, or advance psychiatric assessments and treatment needs. The Intern will work independently; execute assignments by selecting approved methods and techniques; resolve problems using evidence-based approaches; exercise judgment in interpreting guidelines; and ensure that all deadlines are met. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work in partnership with TIOMHC’s Clinical Management Team and their school’s Field Placement Supervisor to ensure seamless coordination and support for field placement activities.
  • Receive referrals from TIOMHC's Clinical Director, Supervisors and Administration team.
  • Assess the mental and behavioral health status of referred clients.
  • Provide counseling/talk therapy to scheduled clients utilizing professional counseling standards.
  • Assist in formulating provisional/differential diagnoses of mild to moderate mental health conditions.
  • Formulate short-term and long-term treatment plans for clients under care.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a CACREP Accredited Master's level Mental Health Counseling Program or CSWE Accredited Master’s level Social Work Program, Certified Rehabilitation Counselor Master's Program, or School Counselor Master's Program.
  • Must be eligible for or possess current NYS pre-license/Permit:


Limited Permit, as authorized by the NYS Office of Professions 

  • Must maintain NYS credentialing requirements throughout the duration of employment.
  • Must maintain active Professional Liability Insurance
